Tips For Your Peace of Mind
Spending time at the river or lake is so much fun! We hope you get to enjoy the beauty of Lake Natoma, Nimbus Flat State Park, Folsom Lake, and the American River while you are spending time in Rancho Cordova.
Water safety is critical! Strong currents, cold water, uneven river bottoms, changing water levels, and possible debris can impact your splash session in and around Rancho Cordova. Buckle up and don't forget to wear a life jacket. Kids under 13 MUST wear a life preserver according to local ordinance SCO 13.08.301 (a).
Not all river or lake areas are patrolled by lifeguards, so take appropriate measures to keep your loved ones safe while you're having a great time.
If you are headed to the Sac State Aquatic Center to enjoy watersport rentals, all life jackets will be provided for you. They are covered in the cost of your rental and come in many sizes.
For your convenience, free child-sized life vests are available to borrow at several spots along the American River Parkway. As you walk near the river, you might see a life jacket rack where some very basic PFDs are hanging up. You can use these PFDs for free, but make sure to return them to the rack when you are done using them. (Note: these are community items that stay outside, and there is no guarantee how many will be available at any one time.)
🦺 Life jackets aren't just for kids. Don't overestimate your swimming abilities in fast-flowing water. Grab a PFD and wear it proudly. Safety isn't silly.
🧴 Don't forget to wear sunscreen and reapply often. Bad sunburns can really dampen the mood of a great trip.
💧 Pack a reusable water bottle and stay hydrated. Playing in the water with a hot sun overhead can really wear you out.
🚮 Pack in and pack out. Help protect our waterways! Practice the concept of "leave no trace" and take all your trash with you.

🌡️ Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature.
❄️ Don't underestimate cold water. Even experienced swimmers will experience cold water shock within one minute in frigid water and lose muscle control within 10 minutes.
🗺️ Plan your route and stay close to shore. Choose a route that allows for easy access to land if needed.
❤️ Know your limits. Paddle within your skill level and don't push yourself beyond your comfort zone in cold water.
