The California Mermaid Convention was started in 2011, first known as the “Promenade of Mermaids.” Today it is billed as the longest running Mermaid event in the U.S., drawing more than 350 guests from across the globe each year. It is also the only mermaid-themed convention with an environmental initiative.

“This year we’re going all up and down the state of California doing beach cleanups and river cleanups, donating directly to the American River Parkway Foundation,” said cofounder Ashley Rastad. “We’ve been working hard to bring our event from a low-waste to a no-waste event.”
