In the contemporary circus performance Cortéo, an Italian word for "cortège" or "processional," a clown witnesses his own burial taking place in carnival of setting stars. This performance is influenced by the Federico Fellini film I Clowns and the exhibit The Grand Parade: Portrait of the Artist as Clown at the National Gallery of Canada.
Cortéo is performed on a giant circular stage made of concentric rotating rings and is directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, creator of the Swiss clown ensemble Teatro Sunil and director of various Cirque Éloize performances! The stage is occasionally divided during the play by thick curtains that depict a picture known as the Cortéo Procession.
